What is Janu Vasti Treatment?
Janu Vasti is a specialized external Ayurvedic treatment that translates to “knee retention” (“Janu” meaning knee, and “Vasti” meaning to hold or retain). It is a deeply nourishing and pain-relieving therapy where a warm, medicated herbal oil or ghee is retained in a well or dam created around the knee joint. This well is traditionally made from a dough of black gram flour, meticulously sealed to prevent any leakage. The therapeutic oil is kept at a consistent warm temperature for a specific duration, allowing its medicinal properties to penetrate deeply into the tissues, nourishing the joint, and alleviating discomfort.
This ancient therapy is a part of the Panchakarma sub-therapies, known for its ability to pacify aggravated Vata Dosha, which is often responsible for pain, stiffness, and degenerative changes in the joints.
