What’s Involved in a Shiro Abhyanga Session?
A typical Shiro Abhyanga session at Dr. Hridya’s Clinic is performed with utmost care and according to classical Ayurvedic principles. The procedure is divided into three stages:
1. Poorvakarma – Preparation
The client is comfortably seated on a knee-high chair in an upright position.
A cloth is wrapped around the body below the neck, and the therapist performs the procedure from behind.
This seated posture is ideal for optimal access to the head and neck.
2. Pradhanakarma – Main Procedure
The therapeutic process involves:
- Oil Selection & Application: The medicated oil, either cold or lukewarm, is gently warmed in a water bath. It is then applied to the scalp, neck, and ear pinna, ensuring full coverage.
- Massage Techniques: Using gentle fingertip pressure, the therapist massages the entire scalp and neck in the direction of hair growth (anuloma gati), honoring the sensitivity of the head, which is considered the center of all sensory functions in Ayurveda.
The massage includes various traditional strokes:
- Picking Strokes: Fingers move as if picking tufts of hair, creating mild traction and promoting circulation.
- Flat Palm Strokes: Smooth, calming motions using open palms.
- Fist Strokes: Soft, rounded movements with closed fists across the head.
- Pressing Technique: Palms are shaped and molded over the scalp to gently press and balance energy flow.
3. Paschatkarma – Post-Therapy Care
After the massage, the client rests for around 15 minutes to allow the oil to penetrate and calm the system.
A hot water head bath is then recommended to complete the detoxification and relaxation process.
